Ninety minutes with Kepler in his Jeep is one of the best parts of my week.

I’m not joking. It ranks up there with that bj in his office. Okay, maybe slightly below. But, still, we get to talk for the entire drive.

And even though his thumb rolls up my thigh more than once, and I’m pretty sure he’s teasing me, and I’m half hard for the entire trip and wondering if we could pull over for just a few minutes, we end up talking for the full ninety minutes. He tells me about his dissertation, and I can’t pretend I understand half of it, but his intelligence lights me up, so much that I actually mumble a “that’s hot” in the middle of his explanation about nanokelvin temperatures.

He hitches a brow. “Actually, it’s pretty damn cold,” he deadpans, and I’m grinning.

The Kepler Quinn I had in my head for all these years is different from the reality. I’d held him at a distance, simkung beating so hard I wasn’t able to notice the rest of him. The real parts.

Like how he tells me that he was raised by his grandfather, who was an inventor that focused on green energy. That he died when Kepler was sixteen, a year before my dad, which explains why Kepler knew how to help with my dad’s funeral. I also learned that he’s an only child, and he lives alone, and I get a peek into what he meant by “empty” that evening in his office.

Not him, but it feels like his world has a lot of vast space in it.

That genuine smile crosses his face again when he talks about heading to see his aunt and uncle, Flora and Adelard, after we’re done at the observatory, and he gives them a quick call to let them know we’ve made it to town safely.

We pass the elevation sign for Rustic and Kepler slows down, taking a smaller highway off the main one. This one winds up a steep incline, cutting between lodgepole pines that only give way intermittently.

We’re at a higher elevation, across a valley from Indigo Falls, where there’s very little population and low light pollution for the observatory. There’s only the Jeep’s headlights as we bump along the path, when the trees suddenly give way to a hill rolling up. At the top is a domed white building on a cement block base.

I suck in a breath, excitement zipping through me. “You weren’t kidding.”

Kepler laughs as he parks around the back. “Did you think I was?”

“I had some doubt, Quinn,” I tease him. “I thought you might lure me out here for dubious activities.”

“Well, that’s still a possibility.” He winks at me before he slides out of his seat, and damn, that gets my brain churning as we walk around the side of the building, gravel crunching under our feet, and pause at the door while Kepler digs keys out of his pocket, new keychain attached.

I tighten the leather band around my wrist,
